Supermarkets are hoping to boost sales of organic products during the next two weeks with the start of Soil Association’s Organic Fortnight tomorrow.
The organic initiative, which will run until September 21, is in response to figures released last month that showed sales of organic foods had slowed due to the credit crunch.
Sainsburys has announced it will offer its customers a raft of offers on its So Organic ranges, while upmarket grocer Waitrose will use in-store displays to drive special offers, including 20 per cent off its organic cottage pie and organic salmon pie.
Asda is set to launch price promotions on more than 40 organic lines, including slashing the price of some organic staples to less than the price of non-organic equivalents.
The Wal-Mart owned retailer has fared better than its rivals, reporting a 25 per cent increase in sales of organic products in the last quarter, while the rest of the market managed just under 3 per cent growth during the same period.
Asda said it has profited from a 10 per cent rise in affluent customers and the fact that cash-strapped customers are still going organic for staples such as minced meat, potatoes and fresh fruit and veg.
