Morrisons Crowned Supermarket Of The Year

Morrisons has completed a unique treble of top industry awards by scooping the Supermarket of the Year crown at the Retail Industry Awards 2008.
The supermarket’s latest accolade follows being named Grocer of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards in May and receiving the Retailer of the Year 2008 title at Retail Week’s awards in March.
The supermarket chain, which saw off strong competition from Asda, Tesco and the Co-operative Group for the top gong, was also successful in the Store Manager of the Year and Fresh Flower Supermarket of the Year categories.
Judges at the ceremony praised the grocer’s outstanding business performance, with one commenting that “Morrisons’ time had finally come”.
Morrisons chief executive Marc Bolland said: “I would like to thank the growing number of around ten million customers that we have shopping with us today for their loyalty and dedicate this award to all our staff that serve them so excellently.”
Other winners at the industry awards ceremony included Tesco, which named Environmental Retailer of the Year, while Sainsbury’s and the Co-operative Group picked up awards for Best Seafood Retailer and Convenience Chain of the Year respectively.
German grocer Aldi, which was on the shortlist for Retailer of the Year, was given an Outstanding Achievement award, due to its “good financial performance” over the past 12 months.
