Asda Kick Off Money Saving Internet Channel

Wed, 04 Mar 2009

Asda has launched its own internet TV channel designed to promote the supermarket's value credentials by helping shoppers save cash.

The new channel, called Saving You Money TV (SYM TV), has been launched on the popular YouTube site and features customer generated tips and suggestions, along with a selection of short films produced by the supermarket "to help people save money".

In the coming weeks the channel will also show how Asda cuts out unnecessary waste from its business to keep its own costs down and provide low prices for its customers.

Rick Bendel, Asda's chief marketing officer, commented: "Our new TV channel is the latest example of how everything we do at Asda is designed to save our customers money."

"The content is driven by our customers who can send in their video tips by post, by text or by uploading them directly to YouTube."

"We also have a team that are constantly trawling the net looking for the best money saving tips on the web, and a mobile TV crew that are on hand to capture tips from people in the street, in our stores or in the comfort of their own homes."

The Asda initiative follows Tesco's recent move to shutdown its in-store TV network, due to what it described as "old, tired and energy inefficient" equipment.

The network was launched in 2004 as an extra revenue stream for the retailer, selling third party advertising, but failed hit profit targets.

Tesco said it is now developing "modern and energy-efficient alternative communication solutions" throughout its 2000 UK stores.
