Asda Reclaims Cheapest Xmas Shopping Crown

Asda is the cheapest supermarket for a trolley of festive goods this year, according to new research.

A Christmas price survey by The Grocer magazine found that a trolley of 33 items, including turkey, Christmas pudding, Champagne, crackers, alcohol and cards, cost £102.08 at Asda, £10.29 less than the average price of the "big five" supermarket chains.

Tesco came second with a trolley price of £105.30, while last year’s winner Morrisons fell two places to third with a cost of £107.51.

In fourth place was Sainsburys, with a trolley of Christmas items costing £114.57, while Waitrose emerged as the most expensive of the five with a £132.29 total – some £30 more expensive than Asda .

Darren Blackhurst, Asda's chief merchandising officer, said: "We're pleased The Grocer has confirmed what our customers already know - their big Christmas shop will cost less at Asda ."

"We have pledged to save our customers £150 million this Christmas and the win proves that once again we have taken the lead in lowering prices."

Commenting on the findings, Grocer editor Adam Leyland said: "Amid fierce competition between all the big supermarkets, there are a record number of promotions on shelf, with more than 2,000 on booze alone."

"But with the most expensive shopping basket over £30 pricier than the cheapest, there's definitely scope for savings for shoppers looking for a frugal Christmas ."

A separate study by The Mirror found that Asda offers the best festive deals for wine, sprouts and gravy, while Tesco provides the biggest savings on crackers, champagne and Christmas pudding .
