Morrisons Awarded Carbon Trust Emission Standard

Supermarket chain Morrisons has been awarded the new Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of its efforts for tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions .
The retailer was among the first 12 companies to receive the badge by the government-funded trust after they were each assessed on whether they accurately measured their carbon emissions and reduced output over the last three years and their commitments to making further reductions.
According to the Trust, Morrisons has achieved a cumulative reduction of 374,190 tonnes of carbon since 2005 and has invested £18million in carbon reduction technology over the last two year.
The Carbon Trust said its decision to launch the accreditation scheme was in response to growing consumer fears that organisations’ green claims are false.
Carbon Trust chief executive Tom Delay said: “Not only do consumers mistrust business’ climate change claims, but that business thinks existing carbon award schemes are confusing and lack credibility.”
A spokesman for the Trust said it expects to see hundreds more organisations receive the standard during the next 12 to 18 months.
