Morrisons Crowned Grocer Of The Year

Morrisons has been named Britain’s ‘Grocer of the Year 2008’ at the annual Grocer Gold Awards held last week.

The top honour came as the Bradford-based grocer announced an industry-leading like-for-like sales growth of 7 per cent for the first three months of 2008, with customer numbers topping 10 million for the first time in the supermarket’s history.

Judges praised the retailer for its strong business results, the success of its stores refresh programme and its focus on offering fresh food, with more workers in-store preparing fresh food each day than any other retailer .

Commenting on the award, chief executive Marc Bolland said: "I dedicate this most prestigious award to all colleagues who have worked so hard through more difficult times and stood-up strong to achieve this tremendous result."

"We now have more and more people shopping at Morrisons, appreciating our great fresh foods, service and value."

Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer magazine, which held the awards, added: "Morrisons has really been transformed in the last 12 months."

"Their focus on quality fresh food delivery to their shoppers is working really well for them, while their fantastic sales growth, availability and key environmental targets are demonstrating their commitment to the industry and customers alike."
