Sainsbury's has announced it will continue to scale up its web operations after posting a 40 per cent increase in internet sales during the six months to October.
The supermarket chains interim figures released today show the around 80,000 online orders being taken by customer each week, compared to 60,000 for the same period last year, and is available to 83 per cent of UK households .
However, the figures are still far less than rival retailer Tesco, which was reportedly processing around 250,000 online orders at the last count.
Sainsburys added an additional 23 stores in the UK this year, taking the total number of shops offering the home delivery service to 137.
Although the retailer didn't release any actual e-commerce sales figures, it said it plans to increase capacity in areas of high demand and aims to operate the service in 200 stores by March 2010 doubling online home delivery sales in the process.
The firm said it would be increasing the number of Christmas delivery slots by 40 per cent in response to customer demand.
The UKs third largest supermarket group announced pre-tax profits for the six months to October rose to £232 million on sales of just under £10 billion.
