UK retailers have seen a decline in the number of shoppers coming to their stores in the week ending 11 June. Numbers have fallen by 8.2 per cent for the same period last year. Retail analysts, Footfall put the decline on the hot weather and the start of the World Cup .
According to Footfall there was a 10.6 per cent reduction in traffic compared to the previous week including a 24.7 per cent fall for department store sales.
A spokesperson for Footfall said, 'While many people traded the shops for the sunshine, others stayed glued to TV sets in bars, pubs and at home as England kicked off their World Cup campaign (against Paraguay on Saturday June 10), hitting UK retailers.
'With another key England game (versus Trinidad and Tobago) on Thursday, it's likely that the evening rush hour could begin as early as 3.00 pm, with late night shopping reserved only for the minority not impressed by the beautiful game.'
