Marks and Spencer is set to launch an advertising campaign to highlight the way they ethically source their food and clothes.
As well as this the company are looking to reduce the salt content in their products, to remove all the bad fats and artificial additives from its range of ready meals. The companys plan is also to introduce clothes that are made from fair trade cotton.
Stuart Rose, chief executive said the campaign called, Look Behind the Label was created after a survey was conducted that showed 87 per cent of respondents wanted retailers to make sure products were made in a fair and humane way.
He said, "This is in response to customer demand. A lot of our customers are concerned about ethical sourcing of food and clothes, about salt and fats.
"Some of these things we had been doing for 30 or 40 years but we werent telling people about them."
The company made over 1,000 checks a year on suppliers. Out of these, 350 visits were made by independent third parties who would drop anyone who didnt behave properly towards their employees.
Stuart Rose acknowledged that M&S reputation could be harmed if any of its suppliers were found to be treating people or the planet badly. He said, "You must have confidence in what you do."
