Consumer group Which? like to stay ahead of the game and keep us updated on which supermarket is offering the best prices. The results have been reported for July 2015, so are you shopping in the right place?
The analysis is based on a basket of 77 food and grocery products, and found that Asda was the cheapest while Ocado was the most expensive. The difference between the two was £11.41.
Each month, the comparison is based on a basket of between 70 and a 100 products, all of which are branded, and which range from fruit to bread to juice. Discounts are included, but not multibuys.
During the month of July, buying from Ocado would have seen you pay £154.78, according to Which? while Asda would have cost £143.37.
However, despite Asda being the cheapest, it hasn’t performed so well recently, as Sainsburys took over from it as the second biggest store in the UK in terms of market share.
Overall, the only outcome of the price war among the big four seems to have been the loss of market share and the growth of the superstores at the ends of the spectrum, the German discounters Aldi and Lidl, and the premium store Waitrose, to name the most prominent.
