The location of the 2014 School Games, which are sponsored heavily by Sainsburys supermarket, has finally been revealed by the government.
Maria Miller, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, said that Manchester will host the event, which has become a hotbed of talent among disabled and non-disabled athletes.
Ms Miller said: “I am delighted that following the success of this year’s event in Sheffield the Sainsbury’s 2014 School Games will be hosted in Manchester, another city passionate about sport.”
Justin King, chief executive of the Sainsbury’s group, added to Ms Miller’s comments by stating that the competition will be a big part of its commitment to promote sports at all levels of society.
The Sainsbury’s 2014 School Games will emulate elements of the Olympics and youngsters will have to take part mock drug testing regimes and stay at an athlete’s village to prepare them for future events.
There will also be a strong cultural component to the occasion, with a well-funded opening and closing ceremony paid for by the supermarket.
