Sainsbury’s has announced plans to create 375 new jobs by opening the supermarket’s first online fulfilment centre.
The move will support the retail giant’s online grocery arm – which hit annual sales of £1 billion in September.
Set to open in the next couple of years, the site will allow Sainsburys to serve an extra 20,000 customers every week.
The facility will be based in east London at Bromley-By-Bow and measures 185,000 sq ft.
Sainsbury’s director of online, digital &cross-channel Jon Rudoe said: “The site will be purpose built with the Sainsbury’s customer in mind and will support our existing store based operation, something that will continue to be the foundation of our online grocery business.”
The online division of the supermarket – which was first launched in 1999 – now delivers to more than 190,000 consumers each week, while sales have seen growth of 15 per cent per year.
Sainsbury’s was also recently awarded the Grocer Gold Award in the Online Retailer of the Year for 2013 – following up on its success in the category in 2012.
