Brits to splash out on baking this Christmas

Supermarket giant Tesco is expecting that home baking sales will rise by as much as 20 per cent over the Christmas period.
The market, which is believed to be worth more than £900 million, is going through its biggest revival since the 1970s thanks to television programmes such as The Great British Bake Off.
Tesco expects yule log kits, traditional Christmas cake mixes and panatone kits to be among the big sellers in December.
Darren Atherton, Tesco home baking products buyer, said: “With home baking being back in fashion and times being hard financially consumers are more likely to be making their own Christmas cake this year than ever before.”
The store has also seen a huge demand in baking utensils and baking related homeware, and so consequently has a section dedicated to such products.
December normally accounts for a third of all baking sale products as demand rises hugely, but it appears that December 2013 will be considerably more profitable than normal.
Tesco also expects baking products such as vanilla extract, marzipan, ready to roll icing and edible silver balls to sell well this season.
