Tesco has announced it will be decreasing the size of a Teesside store in order to make room for a play area and gym.
The supermarket giant has submitted a planning application to transform the first floor mezzanine of the site – which is on Durham Road, Stockton – into a leisure facility that could include a fitness suite and a day nursery, the Evening Gazette reports.
Employees at the store have been reassured the proposals – which were sent to Stockton Council’s planning committee – would not result in any job cuts.
According to a Tesco spokesman, the plans are part of a wider programme aiming to make the Stockton supermarket an even better retail destination for customers.
“We always look to deliver the best possible stores for our customers and look forward to keeping our customers updated as plans for improvements to their local store progress,” they were quoted as saying.
This comes seven years after Tesco expanded the same supermarket to include a bigger choices of departments, including family clothing and an electrical and home entertainment centre.
