The UK’s leading supermarkets are set to stock religious Easter eggs for the first time this year following the success of a lobbying campaign led by bishops.
Waitrose, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and the Co-op have given in to pressure imposed by Christian groups to sell Real Easter Eggs, which are made by the Meaningful Chocolate Company.
Retailing at £3.99, the eggs are the only ones of their kind to mention Jesus on the packaging, while they also explain about the significance of Easter and include an activity for children.
Bishop of Hereford Rt Revd Anthony Priddis, who orchestrated the campaign, said he is delighted Britain’s biggest supermarket chains have taken the challenge seriously.
He claimed the response from Tesco, Morrisons and the Co-op has been particularly encouraging, adding: “I am sure Sainsbury and Waitrose will also discover real demand for an egg explaining the religious understanding of Easter on the box and which supports charitable projects.”
The Meaningful Chocolate Company – a Manchester-based Christian fair trade group – has been selling the religious eggs for the past three years, but until now it was only able to do this at church stalls or online.
