Tesco has been named as the top company in the UK for apprentices.
At the City and Guilds’ Lion Awards, Tesco was recognised for its provision of programmes that help staff improve English and Maths skills.
Chris Jones, chief executive of the awarding body, said: “Winning a Lion Award is a sign of exceptional talent and dedication, and Tesco should be very proud of this remarkable accomplishment. [It’s] commitment to developing employees is inspiring.”
Last year, Tesco pledged to offer 10,000 apprenticeships over the coming two years and this year the supermarket chain will offer 17 new programmes – including a baking scheme that has so far trained more than 200 employees for the chain.
Natasha Adams, the UK operations personnel director at Tesco, commented that apprenticeships are a fantastic way of increasing the talent and productiveness of employees, before outlining the grocer would continue its good work in the future.
City and Guilds is the country’s leading vocational education organisation – with around two million people currently taking courses with the firm.
