Waitrose enjoyed a record-breaking new year trading period in 2012, the supermarket has revealed.
According to figures released by the retailer, the final 12 days of the year, excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day, were its busiest-ever for this time of year.
Indeed, total sales excluding fuel stood 8.8 per cent higher in the run up to new year in 2012 compared to the same timeframe one year earlier, while like-for-like transactions were 5.4 per cent greater.
Mark Price, managing director at Waitrose, noted the 12 days leading up to New Year’s Eve were particularly busy because people were getting ready to celebrate bringing in 2013.
Mr Price stated: “The combination of our inspiring celebratory food and drink, together with great value and offers proved to be a winning combination.”
Through its high sales volumes, Waitrose – which has 288 stores in the UK and the Channel Islands – was able to beat the £300 million milestone over this period for the first time, which came after a record performance during the lead-up to Christmas.
