Waitrose has become the latest supermarket to get involved in the horse meat investigation after it pulled frozen burgers from its shelves on Friday (January 25th).
The chain revealed it has removed the goods – produced by Dalepak, which is currently under scrutiny for its involvement in the contamination – from its stores, despite the fact it said its burgers were found to contain 100 per cent beef when the scandal was first announced.
In a statement, Waitrose stated the meat found in its burgers its traceable back to British farms that it knows. “Our technical team visited the Dalepak site last week and were happy that our products were produced to our high specification and separately from other companies’ products,” it explained.
Around ten million burgers have been taken out of supermarkets across the UK and Ireland upon the revelation that some products sold by Tesco, Iceland, Aldi and Lidl were found to have horse DNA in them.
Meanwhile, Tesco has apologised after it was discovered one of its stores in Cowley, Oxford, was still selling the burgers it was supposed to withdraw.
