Tesco has issued a formal apology to customers with regard to problems with three of its frozen beef burger products sold in the UK and Ireland.
These burgers – which are brought into stores from suppliers – were found to contain horsemeat after being tested by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.
Despite this posing no risk to public health, the supermarket described the sale of these products as unacceptable and has withdrawn the items from all of its stores and online business, while also stopping the sale of all foods bought from the supplier in question.
Tesco promised to get to the bottom of how this happened and said it will report back to shoppers once it has more details.
“If you have any of these products at home, you can take them back to any of our stores at any time and get a full refund,” a statement from the retail giant explained.
Customers were informed that they will not require a receipt in order to get their money back, rather they just need to bring the packaging with them when next visiting one of Tesco’s stores.
