Supermarket reports record strawberry sales

Sainsbury’s supermarket has reported this summer has seen the highest ever sales of strawberries.
Analysts at the grocer believe that great weather and Andy Murray’s historic win at the Wimbledon tennis championship boosted sales.
Some 400 million strawberries were consumed in the summer months, a whopping ten per cent more than last year – with the number of individual fruits chomped down enough to stretch all the way from Lands End to John O’Groats and back again.
Roger Burnley, Sainsbury’s logistics director, said: “So much hard work and planning goes into making our stores a great place to shop and it’s during a summer like this that you see the results of that.”
Sales of other summer essentials also rose. There were 2.5 million bags of ice sold from June 1st to August 24th and this represented a rise of 43 per cent over the same period of 2012 – showing just how high the mercury rose this year.
Charcoal figures also rose by 71 per cent year-on-year, with a further 45,000 disposable BBQs expected to have been sold this weekend just gone (starting 24th August).
