Tesco staff and customers have raised millions of pounds for Cancer Research UK over the course of one year.
The cash – totalling a massive £11.85 million – was collected through activities like a trek to Mount Everest base camp and the Sahara and a festive-themed Cycle to Lapland bike ride, with the latter raising more than £1 million.
It also organised competitions inspired by hit TV shows, such as Tesco Does Strictly and Tesco Distribution’s Got Talent, which raked in over £68,000.
Rebecca Shelley, corporate group affairs director at Tesco, thanked the supermarket’s customers, colleagues and suppliers for their contributions during an amazing year of fundraising.
“Your effort and generosity has been truly inspirational and just goes to show how Tesco can use its scale for good to help communities across the UK,” she was quoted by the Grocer as saying.
The money gathered is set to go towards 32 early diagnosis and detection research projects that help people with the disease receive treatment at a time when it is likely to be more successful.
Last month, the supermarket chain also partnered with Diabetes UK and promised to raise £10 million for the charity.
