Tesco is the supermarket of choice for Brits over the age of 50, new research has suggested.
According to the Saga Platinum study, the chain is the most visited of all similar retailers by individuals in this demographic, with Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda also rated highly.
It was demonstrated, however, that over 50s are prepared to shop around between these retailers in order to find the best deals, with them typically spending £38 every time they use their credit card in each of the stores.
In addition, it was shown that this group are increasingly using plastic when purchasing petrol, with Asda the most favoured shop for this.
Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga Services, noted the group has “become more comfortable using their credit card and because they have used their card wisely and shopped around for the best deals, they are able to treat themselves”.
It was also found that over 50s are willing to splash out in department stores, with John Lewis proving the most popular outlet of this type.
While they typically spend £125 when visiting this shop, they also splash out between £45 and £66 when at House of Fraser and Debenhams.
