Sainsbury’s has enjoyed a strong summer from a sales perspective, new figures have shown.
According to the supermarket’s second quarter trading statement for the 16 weeks to September 29th 2012, total transactions increased by 4.3 per cent and like-for-like sales rose 1.9 per cent over the period.
Justin King, chief executive at Sainsbury’s, stated: “This has been a unique and special summer, during which we have delivered another quarter of good sales, outperforming the market in what remains a challenging retail environment.”
A number of large events affected figures for the second quarter, with the period coming straight after the Jubilee celebrations and drawing to a close with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
Mr King said the retailer was delighted to help customers have a good time over the summer months, noting it is particularly proud of its association with the Paralympic Games, which ran from August 29th to September 9th.
He explained the chain is benefiting from its continued investment in own-label ranges, with its Taste the Difference products proving popular among consumers.
