Tesco supermarket lends support to food collection scheme

A Tesco branch in Northwich has pledged its support to a food collection scheme in the local area.
The supermarket is assisting in the Help Feed People in Need initiative at the beginning of December, with food charity FareShare and Foodbanks group the Trussell Trust helping it achieve its aims, the Northwich Guardian reports.
Philip Clarke, chief executive of Tesco, said: “This Christmas, we want to use our scale and our links with communities across the country to help tackle this growing problem.”
As part of the drive, special shopping lists are to be given to staff and volunteers, who will pick up everyday items such as tinned foods, cereals and rice.
Rob Nash, co-chairman of the Mid Cheshire Foodbank – which is run with the help of local churches – explained Mid Cheshire Foodbank is likely to open two distribution centres in the near future in order to help as many people as possible.
Mr Nash said his group is delighted to be part of Tesco’s project, especially as the festive season is likely to be particularly difficult for people struggling to make ends meet.
