Asda launches online fuel price checker

Asda has unveiled a new online price comparison tool that allows UK motorists to check and compare local petrol prices.
Powered by independent price checker PetrolPrices.com, the new site (asda.com/petrol) will display the highest, lowest and average fuel prices in each of the 195 towns in which Asda operates a filling station.
It will also publish the price Asda charges for both unleaded and diesel to enable drivers to save money by comparing prices within a three-mile radius of their nearest Asda fuel forecourt.
In addition, the supermarket claims the price checker will expose the “huge discrepancies” charged by rival fuel retailers in towns where it doesn’t currently operate, with research by the AA previously indicating that the presence of an Asda forecourt in a town directly affects the average price charged by its rivals.
Andy Peake, Asda’s trading director for petrol, said: “Customers tell us they want to be armed with all the facts before they fill up their cars so they know they’re not being taken for a ride.”
“Our new comparison site will enable millions of drivers to see for themselves how much we charge and how that compares to all the other retailers where they live. ”
“We also intend to shine a headlight on the exorbitant prices other retailers are prepared to charge when Asda isn’t nearby. It’s time for them to come clean, or risk being given the cold, hard shoulder by drivers up and down the country.”
