Tesco turns iconic British summer treat into a sandwich

Tesco has launched what it claims is the world’s first strawberries and cream sandwich to mark the start of summer and this year’s Wimbledon tournament.
The sweet sarnie consists of sliced British strawberries, Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam, served in between two pieces of white poppy seed bread.
Tesco sandwich developer Kathryn Bettles said: “We wanted to create an iconic feel-good sandwich treat that evoked a classic feeling of summertime, and no food is as evocative of British summer or puts a smile on people’s faces more than strawberries and cream.”
“Our challenge was to make the whole sandwich hold together but, by using clotted cream together with a small dollop of strawberry jam, it works very well.”
The strawberries and clotted cream sandwich will be sold in 750 Tesco stores from tomorrow for just £1, and will feature distinctive Union flag packaging in support of British tennis player Andy Murray,
Tesco has developed a reputation for creating innovative sandwich fillings. In 2006 it released a banana and chocolate, which at the time was the world’s first ever commercially made sweet sandwich .
Last year the supermarket made headlines for introducing a calorie-laden lasagne sandwich, which contained 565 calories – more than a quarter of the recommended daily amount for an adult man.
