New Accrington Morrisons store helps secure jobs

Over 40 supermarket jobs in Accrington, Lancashire, have been saved by Morrisons after the retailer completed its takeover of the town’s former Netto store.
The new Morrisons store opened to the public yesterday three weeks after the property was purchased by the supermarket chain.
Store manager Lee McLeod said: “I was overwhelmed by the number of customers that gathered for the opening of the store and the amount of support and positive comments we have been given.”
“It’s brilliant to see that our great value and our quality fresh food has been so well received.”
The new grocery outlet means that three of the UK’s ‘big four’ supermarket groups – Asda, Tesco and Morrisons – now operate in Accrington. As well as giving local shoppers more choice, it is hoped that competition between the three will also help lower prices.
Barnfield councillor Tony Dobson said: “The thing is, do we want an empty Netto store or a new Morrisons, so I do think it is a good thing.”
“The competition should also see the price for the weekly shop go down, something many people would welcome right now.”
