Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has launched a mobile website that allows its customers to shop through its entire range of non-food products and make orders for collection via their mobile handsets .
The site features more than 15,000 lines, including toys, sport and leisure goods, consumer electronics and homewares, and aims to build on the success of the retailer’s free mobile apps that were launched in August 2010.
Using Sainsbury’s order-and-collect app, customers can order, pay for and collect items from nearly 500 of its stores. Orders made before 2pm can be collected the next day.
According to Sainsbury’s, the mobile site can be accessed by any mobile device or operating system, unlike its apps which are only available to download for Android-based smartphones, iPhone handsets and Nokia mobiles .
Tanya Lawler, Sainsburys director of digital and cross channel, said: “We know that our customers are increasingly looking to engage with us digitally and this new mobile shopping site is a big step towards Sainsbury’s becoming a true cross channel retailer.”
“Customers can now browse a fantastic range of products and shop at their convenience, and we are confident that the ability to shop on mobile devices with Sainsbury’s will be a real success with our customers.”
The supermarket added that it is planning to roll out the service to grocery products “soon”.
