Asda overtaken by Sainsburys for Christmas sales

Sainsbury’s is now the UKs second largest supermarket, overtaking Asda, after fantastic pre-Christmas sales.
Sales figures were up by 3.6 per cent in like-for-like sales (excluding petrol ) in the 14 weeks up to 8 January.
Transactions during Christmas week were at a record high of 24.5 million customers.
Ethically sourced turkeys and salmon were in high demand.
Another boost for Sainsburys was the growth of their non-food sales. Clothing and lingerie sales were up by 45 per cent compared to 2009.
Sainsbury’s market share rose by 16.6 per cent in the four weeks up to 26 December whereas Asda’s share was down by 0.1 per cent to 16.5 per cent according to a survey by Kantar Worldpanel.
