Sainsburys Unveils New Supermarkets And Store Extensions

Sainsbury’s, the UK’s third largest supermarket chain, has added over 200,000 sq ft of new retail space with the opening of three new stores and the extension of four existing outlets.
New Sainsburys stores at Stanway (Colchester), Hawick (Scottish Borders) and Neston (Cheshire West) and extensions at the Broadcut (Fareham), Longwater Lane (Norwich), Deepdale (Preston) and Bramingham Park (Luton) outlets have extended the retailer’s total trading space by 226,279 sq ft.
The new and extended stores, which were unveiled yesterday in what was the busiest day of the year for new store space at Sainsbury’s, have also helped create around 950 permanent jobs in the run-up to Christmas .
Neil Sachdev, Sainsbury’s property director, said: “By opening during the busiest trading period of the year, our new stores will get off to a flying start, providing customers with the best quality food at the lowest possible prices.”

This latest push is part of Sainsbury’s ambitious plans to grow new retail space by eight per cent by the end of the year and 15 per cent by March 2011.
