Co-op To Roll Out Green Shopping Baskets

The Co-operative Group has announced it is to introduce the UK’s first 100 per cent recycled shopping basket at thousands of its food stores .
According to the retailer, the “new generation” basket is made entirely from recycled plastic – the first of its kind – and has been ergonomically designed to make it easier and more comfortable for shoppers to carry.
Around 95,000 baskets will be rolled out in 1,000 Co-operative Food stores across the UK by the end of the year, a move which will save 66 tonnes of plastic from landfill or incineration, and some 66 tonnes of CO2.
The green baskets will eventually be introduced at all 3,000 Co-op supermarkets nationwide.
Sean Toal, commercial Director at the Co-operative Food, said: “We’re proud to be at the forefront of green product innovation, and we’re sure our customers will welcome the new generation of shopping baskets, which, as well as being kinder to the environment, are much easier to carry.”
The Co-operative Group has been at the forefront of responsible retailing for over 15 years, and has held the title of Oracle Retail Week ‘Responsible Retailer of the Year’ for three years running.
