Tesco Steps Up Festive Price War With GBP250m Discounts

Tesco has announced it is offering customers’ £250 million worth of festive price cuts, as the fiercest Christmas supermarket price war in years intensifies.
Deals available at the UK’s largest retailer include a £6 turkey, half-price toys and children’s bikes and a range of cut-price frozen food, including 75 sausage rolls for just £2 and two frozen prawn ring platters for £5.
Tesco said it will also continue to reward Clubcard customers with double points on all purchases.
Carolyn Bradley, Tesco’s UK marketing director, said: “We know that our customers are looking for great value this Christmas and that is what we are giving them with more offers than ever before.”
The move comes after rival chain Asda pledged to reduce prices throughout its stores by £150 million for Christmas.
Asda’s chief financial officer Judith McKenna said the festive cost-cutting campaign would be “the most aggressive in a decade”.
Maureen Hinton, retail analyst at research company Verdict, said: “Competition is intense this year. There have been quite a few high street casualties and the big supermarkets have stepped in to fill the gap.”
“But no one individual retailer has managed to win that market share, so they are fighting really hard. It’s certainly true that shoppers will do well this Christmas.”
