A replica of a designer dress worn by Kate Moss sold out within hours of going on sale at supermarket chain Asda .
The supermodel, who has a range of clothing at rival clothes firm Topshop, was recently seen wearing a futuristic silver mini-dress with shoulder pads worth £4,000 on a night out in London .
The Balmain Autumn/Winter 2009 dress inspired Asda’s George clothing brand to produce a replica piece.
The limited-edition dress went on sale on Monday morning at Asda stores nationwide at a budget price of just £16 and was an instant hit, with women shoppers snapping up all of the supermarket’s stock by the afternoon.
Asda said it expects the funky piece of fashion to become one of the supermarket’s best selling products.
George brand director Fiona Lambert said: “At a time of recession when people are finding it hard, we are seeing that people are looking back to the ’80s when fashion was fun, loud and over the top.
“The exaggerated boulder shoulder is the statement of the season. It’s all about super power dressing and OTT glamour.”
The Asda dress is made in England and consists of 67 per cent viscose, 29 per cent metal-effect fibre and 4 per cent elastane.
