Asda has cut prices on 1,000 essential items in its 350 stores across the UK in a move that is expected to spark another supermarket price war.
The price cuts, introduced on Friday, include £1 deals on a range of everyday health and beauty products and 100 frozen food goods, and three-for-£10 deals on leading wines and fresh meats .
The supermarket giant said recession-hit shoppers were guaranteed to find at least 1,000 items with reduced prices at any one time.
Asda chief executive Andy Bond said: “2009 is going to be a very difficult year and I believe we have an obligation to help our customers through these tough times.”
“They want to know that when they spend their hard-earned cash they are getting real value for money and not just a gimmicky price promotion .”
Asda said the discounting promotion will be funded by money saved from reducing packaging waste, using less energy and cutting bag use.
Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons are all expected to introduce similar discounts over the coming days.
