Tesco has been forced to close down one of its Express stores in Birmingham after mice were found inside the mini-supermarket .
According to reports by the BBC, the Tesco Express store in the city centre’s upmarket Mailbox shopping centre was shut on Monday following a visit by local environmental health officers from Birmingham City Council .
A ‘hygiene emergency prohibition’ notice on the doors of the store said there was “mouse activity and food at risk of contamination” and that environmental health officers were satisfied the grocery store “poses an imminent risk of injury to health .”
It added that the premises would remain shut until council officials were satisfied that no risk remains.
A court hearing is scheduled to take place today following a further inspection by health officers.
A Tesco spokesman said measures had already been taken to “resolve the issue”.
He commented: “We are ready to trade again, we are just waiting the necessary checks from the local authority.”
“We take these issues seriously and apologise to customers for the inconvenience and we hope to reopen the store as soon as we can.”
