Champagne prices have been slashed by three supermarket chains today as the battle for festive custom/business heats up.
In the latest supermarket price war, Sainsburys, Waitrose and the Co-op have all launched cut-price deals on selected bottles of fizz.
Upmarket grocer Waitrose has cut the price of its 2004 Duval-Leroy Blanc de Blancs in half to £14.99, the biggest discount the retailer has ever offered on a vintage bottle of champagne .
The Co-op has also halved the price of its Cazanove Grand Apparat Champagne from £30 to £15.
Sainsbury’s has reduced the price of its Etienne Dumont Brut Champagne from £27.99 to £15.99 on single bottles and is offering shoppers a further 25 per cent discount for boxes of six, dropping the price per bottle to just £11.99.
Around 40 per cent of all champagne sales in the UK are carried out in the run-up to Christmas and wine experts insist there has never been a better time to buy top quality bubbly, with the recession forcing more and more retailers to offer discounts .
Francoise Proetti, spokeswoman for the Champagne Information Bureau, said: “What we are seeing this year is retailers fighting for footfall and we are very happy champagne is in the news.”
