Thousands of bottles of mouthwash have been recalled from supermarkets and high street shops across the country over safety fears.
A total of 17 products including Asda, Morrisons and Tesco own-brand mouthwashes, as well as brands Dentyl and Dentimint, were recalled after routine safety tests discovered the products had been infected with a bacteria.
The manufacturer, Robert McBride Ltd, urged customers who have bought bottles of the various mouthwash brands in the last three weeks to return them as a “precautionary measure”.
A spokesman for the company said it was unlikely the bacteria would affect health people, but warned there was an “outside risk” it could affect people with chest infections or a susceptibility to lung infections.
“There is little, if any safety risk associated with the affected products,” he said. “But those people who have a lung, respiratory or chest condition or a problem with their immune system, and have used one of the affected products, should as common practice seek GP advice.”
“All the production systems have been rechecked and sanitised and there is no continuing problem.”
The manufacturer said it thought ‘a few thousand’ bottles could have been affected but stressed it has received no reports of any ill effects.
Colin McIntyre, managing director at Robert McBride Ltd, added: “We apologise for this
inconvenience and fresh stock will be delivered, when appropriate, to those retailers and customers affected.”
