Tesco To Trial Carbon Labels On Own-Brand Products

Tesco shoppers are now able to choose products based not only on their taste and nutritional content but also on their impact on the environment thanks to the introduction of a new carbon footprint labelling system.
The supermarket giant said the labels will allow customers to compare the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced during the life of each product, including use and disposal.
The information will initially appear on 20 items across ranges of Tesco own-brand light bulbs, potatoes, orange juice and washing detergent .
The products will include a footprint logo alongside the carbon footprint figure, an endorsement from the Government-funded Carbon Trust and Tesco’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions .
Some of the products will also feature hints and tips on how shoppers can reduce their carbon emissions at home as advised by the Carbon Trust.
The move comes as companies face increasing pressure to play their part in helping the UK to cut its carbon emissions and reduce climate change .
Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy commented: “We want to give our customers the power to make informed green choices for their weekly shop, and enlist their help in working towards a revolution in green consumption.”
“We encourage all of our suppliers and competitors to support the Carbon Trust in this collaboration.”
Carbon Trust chief executive Tom Delay added: “We hope today’s announcement will further catalyse action from other manufacturers and retailers to drive more and more carbon out of their supply chains and products .”
The carbon footprint measure has been developed by the Carbon Trust and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in collaboration with BSI British Standards.
