The first Tesco supermarket store has opened in the US – three days ahead of schedule.
The Fresh &Easy store in Helmet, east of Los Angles is the first step in Tesco’s ambitious US plans. The supermarket giant is investing over £250m in the development of more than 100 stores across three US states – California, Arizona and Nevada, with more to follow.
According to a local US newspaper, Press Enterprise, the Fresh &Easy store was described as having an “American feel” thanks to its stock of national brands, in addition to the large amount of private label supply .
The store also includes a self-serve checkout and a “kitchen table”, where staff members prepare chicken curry and pizza .
Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco, believes the US business could eventually be as big as Tesco’s UK operations. “We have a strong team in place. We have made good progress in obtaining retail space,” he said.
He added: “We have one of the most successful, if not the most successful, approaches to international retailing. The offer is local – designed by local teams for local customers.’’
