Waitrose has revealed trading at its two Edinburgh stores, the only two in Scotland, are 40 per cent ahead of business targets.
The news comes at a great time for the supermarket group as the first year of operations in Scotland are being celebrated, where sales now equal the busiest Waitrose stores in London and the South East .
The two retail sites, in Morningside and Comely Bank, have received over 2.25 million customers over the last year. Waitrose said the shops’ success had been driven by strong sales of organic fruit and vegetables .
Director of customer development at Waitrose, Tony Solomons, said the supermarket’s high-end goods appealed to Edinburgh customers .
“We’ve had an excellent first year in Scotland and our customers clearly have a big appetite for healthy foods, including organic fruit and vegetables where we are trading significantly above the UK average,” he commented.
Mr Solomon added that the business had plans to extend its services for Edinburgh shoppers, thanks to the launch of online shopping and ‘Waitrose Deliver’ – the home delivery service.
