M&S has the seasons first tomatoes

The tomato season has started early this year as Marks &Spencer will be taking delivery of its first cherry tomatoes this weekend. This is the earliest they have ever been compared to previous seasons.
The variety of tomato is the Nectar cherry tomatoes which are grown by the Wight Salads Group, Kent. They grow tomatoes exclusively for M&S and will be available in selected stores only.
The tomatoes were planted on Christmas Day by grower Mike Flux, who says the fruit has never been picked so early before from his nursery for any supermarket.
Flux said, “We have been really pleased with how well the plants have grown, despite the cold weather.”
Peter Ireland from M&S said this is the earliest the chain has ever stocked UK tomatoes. He continued, “We have been trialling British tomatoes grown under lights this winter on the Isle of Wight. But this is the earliest that summer crops of British tomatoes have ever been on our shelves.
“We are committed to British tomatoes and during the summer around 95 per cent of our tomatoes will be British. This will be backed up with in-store point of sale information to really get the message to our customers that British is best.”
