Dental treatment offered by supermarkets

A new £50 million supermarket development in Hereford is likely to include facilities for three new dental surgeries. The site is owned by Asda and is situated at the Belmont roundabout.
Simon Hairsnape of Herefordshire Primary Care Trust said, “When planning permission was granted it was agreed there would be a community facility, which Asda is building on behalf of the council.
“The Primary Care Trust has some input on the site and we think the most deserving cause is local dentistry; we are still at the discussion stage about the plans.”
He went on to say that the clinics were likely to be dental access centres. However with the new dental contracts the difference was minimal between dental access and NHS centres.
He continued, “We still have to work out exactly how we will use them. Some patients and staff from Gaol Street clinic and the centre on Ross Road will probably be combined in the new centres and car parking will be relatively easy.
“Gaol Street clinic will continue but the buildings at Ross Road are old and have a limited timescale so we will probably close down those surgeries eventually.”
The clinics are to be built by Asda but an opening date has not been decided.
