Asda To Expand Its Online Market

Asda is set to create 1,800 extra jobs by expanding its internet operations in order to match rivals Tesco and Sainsbury’s .
The company has admitted to being behind in acknowledging the demand for online services and wants to now accelerate Britain’s online shopping war.
Asda would create new openings for office staff, drivers, and pickers who collect goods from the shelves to be delivered to customers homes .
In order to match the level of geographic coverage of rivals Tesco and Sainsbury’s, the supermarket chain said that 157 out of its 310 stores would offer online shopping by October next year compared with just 91 stores at present.

A spokeswoman said, “Tesco and Sainsbury cover about 80 per cent of the country at the moment. We will be roughly at the same level .
“It means that 100 per cent of current Asda customers would be able to shop from home and have food delivered to the door compared with the current level of just 50 per cent,” she continued.
The decision by Asda to expand its online shopping arm comes at a time when the value of internet sales in the UK is rising considerably.
An estimated figure of £7 billion will be spent on the Internet in weeks leading up to Christmas, which equals to a 40 per cent increase from last year.

The Office for National Statistics released figures last month, showing that the value of internet sales to households rose almost 30 per cent to £21.4 billion in the last year.
Tesco’s online company, tesco.com, recently showed the benefits of online shopping by announcing that profits rose 43.1 per cent in the first 6 months of the year following a 28.7 per cent rise in sales .
