Asda has announced it is cutting the price of thousands of products this weekend as it launches what it claims is its most aggressive Christmas price campaign.
The supermarket chain said it would introduce thousands of new rollbacks from today, adding to more than 4,000 price cuts announced earlier this month.
The latest round of price cuts includes reductions on a selection of electrical goods, as well as food and drink .
Asda said it is aiming to be the cheapest supermarket in the UK for the 12th Christmas in a row and claims the campaign will help cash-strapped consumers affected by the credit crunch .
Asda president and CEO Andy Bond commented: “Our core purpose is to make goods and services more affordable.”
“In the run-up to Christmas and month end, when household budgets are under greater pressure than ever, we know how important it is to save our customers money. That’s why we have launched our most aggressive Christmas price campaign ever.”
The Wal-Mart owned retailer also confirmed that it would be passing on the Chancellor Alistair Darling’s 2.5 per cent reduction in VAT to its customers from Monday in response to announcements by rivals Tesco and Sainsburys .
In addition, all TVs and DVD players sold at Asda will be available free of VAT over the weekend.
