Statistics from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs show that Tesco sell the most 5p single-use carrier bags.

The statistics state that, over the last 12 months, 637 million of these bags were used by Tesco customers, compared to 165 million used by Asda customers and 51 million by customers of Sainsbury's.

Tesco currently have a market share double the size of Asda and Sainsburys, but sold around five times as many carrier bags than Asda, and 12 times as many as sold by Sainsbury's.

Following the implementation of rules introduced in October 2015 that forced a 5p charge for each single-use carrier bag, there has been a dramatic decline in the amount of bags being used.

Prior to the introduction of this regulation, around seven billion carrier bags were issued each year by the leading retailers, compared to just 1.3 billion provided over the last 12 months.

A Tesco spokesman said: "We're encouraging our customers to use fewer single-use bags, and since the introduction of the Bag Levy in 2015, the number being bought at Tesco has decreased by 80 per cent.

"The money raised from our customers buying bags is making a big difference to local communities across the country, with over £30 million being provided to more than 4,600 community projects as part of Tesco's Bags of Help initiative."
