Supermarket named most sustainable food retailer

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has been named the number one sustainable food retailer in the world.

For the sixth year in a row, the chain claimed the top spot in the 2012 Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes review - and the continuation of this success has come following the launch of the company's 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan in 2011.

As part of this scheme, the supermarket identified 20 socially and environmentally responsible targets to be met by 2020.

Sainsburys noted its green credentials have been boosted through its ongoing commitment to the environment, sourcing, health, community and employees .

Justin King, chief executive of the retailer, said: "Being our sector leader for the sixth year is great recognition for the work we are doing to embed sustainability throughout our business."

Mr King explained modern day customers are not only looking at prices when purchasing goods, but also considering the values held by the brands they are buying from.

As such, consumer loyalty, sales and colleague inspiration are all likely to improve as a result of Sainsbury's 20 by 20 initiative.
