Tesco has kicked off the new year by extending its Big Price Drop campaign and introducing a new wave of price cuts .

The supermarket giant has slashed prices on over 350 new products spread across popular staples, including bread, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables by an average of 15 per cent, and claims that a trolley containing a selection of 50 of these items can save customers as much as £8 on their grocery shop .

Tesco launched its £500 million Big Price Drop initiative in September, initially reducing prices on thousands of everyday essentials in a bid to help hard-pressed consumers save money .

Richard Brasher, chief executive of Tesco UK, said: "As we look ahead to 2012 people across the country are saying they need more help with the cost of living."

"With rising utility bills and soaring petrol prices, families are having to cut down on the staples, not just the extras and seeing their incomes 'squeezed."

"Tesco is committed to helping families in these tough times and the Big Price Drop, an investment of more than £500m in lowering prices on everyday products, will continue on into 2012."

"Big Price Drop is not a one-hit wonder. It is a rolling campaign to help customers save more money everyday at Tesco on the essentials they need the most."
