Waitrose has announced plans to create 1,500 supermarket jobs in the North West of England by opening at least 10 new stores in the region over the next five years.

The upmarket retailer said it aims to invest £100m in significantly expanding its store portfolio for the North West. The John Lewis-owned company currently has eight stores in area, including the little Waitrose shop which opened in Chester last week.

Among the new outlets planned will be a £35m distribution centre in Chorley, Lancashire, which is scheduled to open in autumn 2012 and will bring with it 600 new jobs .

David Jones, Waitrose’s supply chain director, said the plans marked "another chapter in our history and the growth of the Waitrose brand in the North West".

He added: "We have really began to establish our brand here and we are looking forward to making a continued investment and creating new jobs in what is rapidly becoming a heartland territory for us."

Earlier this week, Waitrose announced a new deal with New Zealand grocer Nosh Food Market to sell its products in Nosh stores and help the latter expand its share of the New Zealand grocery market.

Under the new partnership, up to 100 Waitrose-branded goods will be available in six Nosh stores by Christmas.
