Asda has fired back against its rivals’ price-cutting promotions by announcing a major price cutting campaign.
The UK’s number two supermarket has pledged to reduce the cost of some 3,000 products including essential items such as bread, fruit, cereal, toilet tissue and laundry powder .
In addition, customers who spend £40 on their in-store shopping this week will receive a £5 "thank you" voucher to redeem off their next £40 in-store or online shop.
The price cuts and voucher promotion, which will run alongside the retailer’s 10 per cent Price Guarantee scheme, come in response to Tesco’s £500million 'Big Price Drop' campaign which sparked the latest price was between Britain’s major supermarkets .
Last week Sainsbury's unveiled its Brand Match promotion, which refunds customers if the branded goods in their basket are cheaper at rivals Tesco and Asda, while earlier this moth Waitrose kicked off its biggest ever price-value campaign aimed at highlighting the great value it offers.
Despite the various price schemes, Asda denied there was any competition from other grocers .
A spokesman said: "Other stores don't want a price war, they only want a skirmish over price perception. There is no price war because no other stores showed up to win."
