Tesco slashing more prices for Christmas

Tesco has announced it is to extend its ‘Big Price Drop’ campaign by cutting prices on another 1,000 items from today.

The £500m price cutting promotion was first unveiled in September and has since proved a big success, with the supermarket revealing that there have been well over 100 million transactions through the tills containing Big Price Drop lines, and over 13 million Clubcard customers (90 per cent of those to shop with the supermarket during this period) have saved at the tills.

Richard Brasher, chief executive of Tesco's UK operation, said the new wave of price cuts will be made on more staple goods, as well as seasonal favourites to help shoppers save money in the run-up to Christmas .

"In these tough times, customers are understandably concerned about the cost of Christmas but are still determined to celebrate with their families," he said.

"Big Price Drop wasn’t a one hit wonder. It is a rolling campaign to help customers and tomorrow we will launch the Big Christmas Price Drop – reducing the price of 1,000 more everyday products that reflect what customers need to buy at this time of year. "

Brasher also revealed that a number of large Tesco stores would open until 10 or 11 o'clock at night on Christmas Eve to win over last-minute shoppers.

Tesco recently said that it expects to sell 2m Christmas puddings, 1m yule logs and 7.5m packs of mince pies in the build up to Christmas .
